Database

General Information

As part of the project, we are compiling a database of collections, artists, and materials in order to create a springboard for further research on documentary drawing as a field of interdisciplinary inquiry.

The project’s preliminary working definition of “documentary drawing” hinges on three necessary characteristics:
(1) hand-drawn,
(2) on-the-spot sketching,
(3) recording a particular scene or event.

These basic criteria have been chosen to identify a clear body of sources and to distinguish them from related material. However, as research progresses, this definition will need to be further calibrated and refined. The focus is on selecting and exploring relevant materials, viewing and cross-referencing them, and researching their wider context.
